As I'm working my way through _Rediscovering the Goodness of Creation_ by Phillips, at the end of a chapter he describes one aspect of how sin ensnares us by capturing our affection and applying it to something other than God. Re-ordering our affections toward anything _but_ God is bound to lead us toward a plethora of sins. He shares a story from the documentary Planet Earth II of baby sea turtles being born on the beaches in Barbados.
These sea turtles are often born on the full moon with such timing that they chase after the moon and it ultimately leads them to the water. However, as the city behind the beach has grown the lights, much closer and seemingly easier to attain, have caused these turtles to turn toward them and wander into the city where they almost always die. However, Barbados, and the Planet Earth camera crew for the episode, go collect these turtles and orient them to the water.
The point he was making, and one I think we can all benefit from, is that sometimes we have to have our own affections and longings forcibly reoriented. Sometimes this comes from God simply reaching down and guiding, other times it's by some misfortune, and others it may be a friend saying "Don't be a sea turtle." However it happens, the key point is that if our affections and longing are not pointed to God as the _telos_ of all things, we need to step back and possibly reorient ourselves before it's forced upon us.
