Major companies and even governments are dumping trillions of dollars into a system purely based on FOMO. All the AI evangelists that are out there drumming up hype, but very little return on investment. What happens if/when we give up? What will these companies do? What will the government do when Meta or Google realize their fault, are they "too big to fail, too?" Or will they use this opportunity to drive more and more users toward the hyper-scaler, subscription model of computing? Will we find ourselves having to subscribe to a platform in order to be able to use a computer? Are we going back to the time when only the elites/military have access to the internet? These are questions that I don't have answers to, and honestly, I'm a little frightened to think about it too deeply.
